    Reading this is so frustrating. Every chapter you just want to tear your hair out from being annoyed. It’s more than 50 chapters already but still no character development. Both ML and FL is stuck! They’re in a loop! Doing things over and over. Ugh! It’s maddening!

    if i could rate this disaster of a story in the negatives, i would. abuse should never be romanticized like this, especially not abuse this sinister and severe.

    SPOILERS:
    the ml is extremely controlling, abusive and obsessive despite how cold and completely unjustifiably hateful he comes off at first. he never grows as a person. he actually gets worse later on in the story, despite his baseless claims of growth. he develops victim complex which the author seems to think makes everything he said and did to violet okay. his garbage personality and behaviors get romanticized even after he pushes her to the point of attempting to take her life multiple times.

    she eventually runs and leaves the relationship- this was the best part of the series! naturally, it goes downhill after he stalks her against her wishes and tracks her down and ruins the life she’s built away from him. both he and his employees try to guilt trip her into seeing him again. at first, she stands against it (good for her!) but it’s clear the author doesn’t want violet to escape his abuse, as she caves and agrees to let him try to win her over (a moment framed as romantic).

    of course, this is after he forces them to switch bodies so she will have to see him and have skin-to-skin contact to switch back. just #romantic things, right? (note my extreme sarcasm)

    the author tries to exempt him from the blame by shifting it all to his parents, but it doesn’t work like that. the author then gets into his massive woe-is-me victim complex, where he makes the suffering he put her through all about him.

    earlier in the story, when she tried to have an open and honest conversation about her very poor mental health (that he caused), he got Very irrationally angry at her and blew up in her face, accusing her of trying to guilt trip him and saying that she’s never really suffered, not compared to him. later in the story, when he’s stalked her and tracked her back down, he does exactly what he accused her of— using his poor mental health and threats of death to manipulate her.

    the premise of this story had potential, but the romanticization of a frankly outright vile man ruined that. i’ve read a lot of these, and i’ve seen more than a few downright awful male leads, but i do not think i’ve ever genuinely despised a male lead to this extent. violet deserves so much better than him, and winter is such a disgustingly awful person who only deserves the worst life has to offer.

    this genuinely reads as pretty severe stockholm syndrome, especially after she’s escaped and he’s tracked her down. she will look back on moments where he treated her like she was subhuman scum, and somehow we’re supposed to be like “aww, she still loves him and can’t stop thinking about him!” no.

    the fact that she has more memories of him belligerently screaming at and abusing her than him showing her basic human decency and kindness is more than a hiccup in the relationship. it’s a massive problem. the basic human kindness contrasted with his abuse does not make those moments of sweetness sweeter, it makes them very deeply sinister.

    this is textbook 101 abusive relationship. the loud, aggressive abuse followed by equally excessive gift giving and other typical honeymoon phase behaviors. his obsessive need to have and control her at all times. his refusal to listen to how bad he makes her feel without invalidating her struggles- he went through all these awful things, like being enslaved by tiny little dwarves! (wtf was up with that?) she doesn’t know what it’s like to REALLY suffer.- OR -i made you feel bad by treating you like dirt? well imagine how miserable it makes ME feel for you to tell me that!- he’s so irredeemably awful.

    again, if i could rate it in the negatives, i would. the romance genre needs stop romanticizing these types of men. if he wasn’t handsome, people would rightfully be absolutely disgusted with him and his behavior, and everyone would be rooting for her to escape him.
